Exploring Panama City, the Boquete Cloud Forest & a Private Pacific Island Retreat

Panama is emerging as one of Central America’s most compelling destinations. A blend of rich history, biodiverse landscapes, world-class coffee culture, and remote coastal luxury. To experience it firsthand, our team embarked on a six-day FAM trip designed by our partner, Namu Travel Group. Their journey took them from the skyscrapers of Panama City to the cloud forest in the mountains of Boquete and onward to an untouched private island on the Pacific Coast.

This “Advisors Unpacked” recap brings their experiences to life — the hotels, the food, the logistics, and what surprised them.

Panama City: History, Hospitality & the VIP Canal Experience

The Bristol Hotel — A Business-Meets-Leisure Base in the Financial District

Our team's first night was spent at The Bristol, a Virtuoso property known for spacious residential-style suites and a polished, classic feel.

“It’s a beautiful hotel —well-appointed — the service has that boutique-hotel attentiveness we really appreciated. The rooms are spacious and understated — not flashy and ideal for families who need the residential suite layout.

While not walkable to Casco Viejo, the Old Town, The Bristol works well for travelers doing day trips outside the city as its location allows for easier access than staying in the Old Town.

Dinner at the hotel’s signature restaurant, Sal Si Puedes, set the tone for Panama’s culinary excellence. The tasting menu was standout, from rich local beef dishes to the delicate chocolate dessert our team still rave about.

“Dinner at Sal Si Puedes was one of the best meals of the entire trip. Sal Si Puedes translates to ‘Get out if you can,’ a reference to the historic gates of Old Panama City — if you didn’t make it out before sundown, you were essentially stuck until morning.”

And for coffee lovers? The group enjoyed their first taste of famed Geisha coffee, the world’s most expensive varietal — a theme that would return in Boquete.

A VIP Look at the Panama Canal

The group unanimously agreed: the VIP Panama Canal Experience is the only way to see the canal. “I didn’t expect to be blown away by a canal but the VIP access completely transforms the experience. You really understand how monumental it is.”

Their VIP access allowed them entry to areas off-limits to the general public, while bypassing crowds, while getting a close up view with a detailed explanation of the history and mechanics of the canal. The accompanying IMAX film, narrated by Morgan Freeman, offered unexpectedly deep cultural context — “a perfect way to understand Panama before exploring the rest of the country. Our team loved the contrast between the giant freight ships and the small local vessels moving through the locks together. It’s such an amazing piece of engineering.”

Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo — French Elegance Meets Colonial History

Next came a tour of Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, one of only six Sofitel Legend properties worldwide, and the most recent addition to this historic collection of hotels. Set in the restored 1917 Union Club building, the hotel blends French heritage with Old Town charm.

"Walking out the door, you’re in the heart of Old Town — restaurants, shops, energy everywhere,” The area reminded the team of Old San Juan or Cartagena, with colonial architecture and a lively cultural scene.

Hotel highlights included:

  • An exclusive guest-only pool overlooking the water

  • A chic Carolina Herrera–themed café

  • A moody speakeasy hidden behind an unmarked door

  • Generous rooms with balconies or terraces

  • Serious craftsmanship in the tilework, stone, and historic preservation

Advisor Insight: “Anyone who wants a walkable, atmospheric neighborhood will love it. You feel instantly connected to Panama’s heritage."

Boquete Cloud Forest: Coffee, Culture & a Storied Boutique Hotel

The Historic Panamonte Hotel — A Local Icon in the Mountains

From Panama City, the group flew, via COPA airlines, to David. After a 45 minute scenic drive, they arrived to the lush mountains of Boquete, home of cloud forests, world-renowned coffee estates, and a refreshingly cool climate.

Their hotel, the historic Panamonte, which has stood for over a century, now flourishes under the expert guidance of celebrated chef and anthropologist Charlie Collins. With his visionary leadership, the property exudes a perfect blend of culinary excellence, cultural insight, and a heartfelt hospitality. Surrounded by botanical gardens, the atmosphere is warm, traditional, and rich with cultural heritage.

The public spaces were a hit:

  • Wraparound porches

  • A cozy cocktail bar (the group’s favorite drinks of the trip)

  • Chef Charlie’s exquisite cuisine

  • Gardens perfect for yoga, picnics, and quiet reflection

The team loved Panamonte’s authenticity and access to Boquete’s town center.

Lamastus Family Estates — A Coffee Experience Unlike Any Other

High in the cloud forest, the team toured Lamastus Family Estates, known for their production of award-winning Geisha coffee varietal. Guided by their charming guide Elisio, they experienced the entire coffee process — from cultivation and careful harvesting to processing, drying, and roasting, culminating in an immersive “cupping” session to savor the flavors, just as professionals do.

Advisor Insight: “You’re up in the clouds at these estates — literally. The higher you go, the better the coffee gets, and you feel that in the landscape around you.”

They sniffed, slurped, compared varietals, and even sampled tree tomatoes, a local fruit growing among the coffee plants. They summarized their experience beautifully, “It’s not just a coffee farm — it’s a story of craftsmanship, deep-rooted family traditions, and the natural beauty of Boquete.”

Boquete Hanging Bridges — Cloud Forest Adventure

The team pivoted mid-trip to experience Boquete’s hanging bridges. After bouncing up the mountain in a vintage open-air truck, they crossed suspended walkways overlooking prehistoric-looking ferns, waterfalls, and dense greenery. Michelle Bates mentioned how it reminded her of the Jurassic Park movies.

Advisor Insight: “It feels like Costa Rica’s Arenal region — but without the crowds. That’s what makes Boquete so special,”

The advisors wished they had more time in the region to experience the array of activities in including, Sunrise hikes to Volcán Barú, Ziplining, Rafting, Birdwatching and Biodiversity walks.

Boquete quickly emerged as a favorite: authentic, peaceful, and full of adventure.

Isla Palenque: Barefoot Luxury on a Private Pacific Island

A scenic, 2 hour drive south, delivered the team to a remote boat dock surrounded by cows, horses, and farmland. Here they boarded a 20-minute private launch to Isla Palenque.

Isla Palenque is a 400-acre private island sanctuary on Panama’s Pacific Coast, part of the award-winning Cayuga Collection of sustainable luxury hotels. Home to just one 6-bedroom villa and eight secluded beachfront casitas, the island feels untouched, a true “barefoot luxury” escape where jungle meets ocean. With its immersive biodiversity, farm-to-table cuisine, and locally rooted staff, Isla Palenque blends high-end comfort with the authentic soul of Panama.

Advisor Insight: “This is the place for clients who want privacy, nature, and luxury without pretension.

The Private Villa — Six Bedrooms of Jungle-to-Ocean Luxury

Perched over the Pacific, the 6-bedroom villa offers:

  • A cliffside pool overlooking the ocean

  • Private chef

  • Butler and mixologist

  • Massive suites with headboards carved from fallen island trees

Advisor Insight: “Waking up in the villa felt like staying in a treehouse overlooking the ocean. I could hear howler monkeys from the bathtub — it was unforgettable.”

The Casitas — Romance in the Jungle

The team also toured Isla Palenque’s beachfront casitas, ideal for couples. Each casita offers:

  • A fully air-conditioned bedroom

  • A completely open-air bathroom (beautiful, but not for everyone)

  • A short leafy walk to the beach

  • Privacy and immersion in nature

They are perfect for a honeymoon or couples’ retreat, the group agreed. “The open-air bathroom is stunning, but definitely for clients who love nature and don’t mind being outdoors. It’s glamorous, but adventurous.”

Island Adventures — Whales, White-Sand Beaches & Hidden Caves

A boat day revealed Panama’s surprising coastal diversity. Near the resort, the sands are volcanic and golden — but a 20-minute ride offshore led to a protected National Park with a totally different environment. “The boat day was incredible — untouched islands, white-sand beaches, and water so clear it looked like the Caribbean.”

The next morning, the group, also kayaked to the island’s bat cave. “Kayaking to the bat cave at sunrise was such a unique experience. It’s adventurous, but approachable for most travelers.”

Advisor Insight: “If someone wants an authentic, sustainable, luxury island experience — this is it.”

Options for your Return to Panama City

For your return back to Panama City, clients enjoy a boat transfer back to the mainland harbor and then car to the airport. Clients can opt to fly with COPA or with Air Panama. If you fly with Air Panama, you connect via smaller regional airport. The advantage being the regional airport is a faster experience compared to the larger airport serviced by COPA. Air Panama provides small plane service while COPA provides larger planes via the main airport.

Return to Panama City: A Showstopper Final Night at Hotel La Compañía

Their final night delivered the trip’s biggest architectural surprise — Hotel La Compañía, in the heart of Casco Viejo. Built within the preserved bones of a monastery and three adjoining heritage buildings, the hotel blends:

  • A French wing

  • A Spanish wing

  • An American wing

Each with its own design language, history, and art.

Advisor Insight: “This might be one of the most impressive hotels I've ever seen.”

With five restaurants, curated antique collections, and secret passageways, the property feels like a living museum."

The night ended at Villa Ana, a hidden jazz bar where phones are sealed in pouches at the door — allowing guests to truly disconnect.

“It was unforgettable — one of the coolest endings to any FAM trip we’ve done.”

Planning a Panama Itinerary: Advisor Recommendations

After experiencing Panama’s cities, mountains, and coasts, the team identified ideal ways to design a luxury itinerary:

Minimum Stay:

6 nights (Though 8–10 nights allows a deeper, less rushed experience.)

Best Add-Ons That Don’t Require Internal Flights:

  • El Otro Lado (Caribbean side) — boutique villas, boat access, mangroves, yoga, artisan experiences

  • Buenaventura (Pacific side) — beaches, villages, volcano hikes, kid-friendly luxury

Best Time to Go:

Panama’s rainy season has quick passing showers — “Don’t trust the weather app,” the advisors emphasized. Even in peak rain, experiences continued uninterrupted."
