We recently visited a longtime favorite of Elli Travel Group, The Pulitzer in Amsterdam. Blending historic charm with modern luxury, this distinguished property offers travelers an authentic Dutch experience. For those seeking a truly unique stay—with exclusive Virtuoso amenities—The Pulitzer is a quintessential choice in the heart of Amsterdam.
A Tapestry of History: The Pulitzer's Unique Heritage
What truly stood out during our stay is that the hotel is a living museum of Dutch history. Comprising 25 interlinked 17th and 18th-century canal houses, the hotel embodies the spirit of Amsterdam's Golden Age. Originally opened in 1970 and named after Herbert Pulitzer, the grandson of the famed publisher Joseph Pulitzer, the property underwent a meticulous renovation in 2016 under the guidance of designer Jacu Strauss.
Each of the 225 rooms and suites is uniquely designed, reflecting the building's rich past while incorporating contemporary comforts. Original architectural elements like wooden beams and intricate staircases are harmoniously blended with modern amenities, offering guests a distinctive and luxurious stay.
We were able to tour several of the rooms during our stay and two standouts are the Loft Suite and the Canal Suites.
The Loft Suite: Family-Friendly Elegance
For families seeking extra space and stylish accommodation, the Loft Suite stands out. The first level features a wonderful living/sleeping area and bathroom, while the second level features the queen size bed with exposed beams. Large windows allow for the room to be filled with sunshine throughout the day. The suite was designed Jacu Strauss, it captures the essence of Amsterdam's rich history while providing modern comforts.
The Canal Suite: A Private Entrance to Amsterdam’s Iconic Views
For travelers seeking an immersive canal-side experience, the Canal Suite at Pulitzer Amsterdam offers a unique blend of privacy and luxury. This elegant one-bedroom suite features a separate sitting room with views of the canals, a seperate bedroom with a king-size bed, and a marble bathroom with a bathtub.
The suite's design harmoniously combines classic elegance with contemporary comfort. High ceilings and period details evoke the Dutch Golden Age, while modern furnishings and amenities ensure a comfortable stay. The spacious living area includes plush seating, and large windows that flood the room with natural light, offering picturesque views of the Keizersgracht canal.
Guests can enjoy a private canal-side entrance, providing an exclusive and authentic Amsterdam experience. Whether sipping morning coffee or unwinding with an evening cocktail, the Canal Suite offers a serene retreat amidst the city's vibrant energy.
The Courtyard Garden: An Urban Oasis
One of the hotel’s hidden gems is its serene courtyard garden—a tranquil oasis tucked away from Amsterdam’s lively streets. Ideal for a morning coffee, a leisurely lunch, or an afternoon cocktail, this peaceful space quickly became one of our favorite spots. After checking in, we recharged from our flight with a light breakfast and some fresh air. Throughout our stay, the garden was alive with both guests and locals, sipping espresso, enjoying light bites, or unwinding with a drink before dinner.
Culinary Delights: Dining at Pulitzer Amsterdam
Pulitzer Amsterdam offers a trio of exceptional dining venues, each providing a unique culinary experience that reflects the hotel's blend of historic charm and modern sophistication.
Jansz.: Modern Dutch Cuisine with a Historic Twist
Located within the Pulitzer Amsterdam, Jansz. is an all-day dining restaurant that artfully reimagines modern Dutch cuisine. Inspired by 17th-century craftsman Volkert Jansz., the restaurant celebrates locally sourced ingredients and beautifully crafted dishes. The elegant setting—where classic canal house architecture meets contemporary design—sets the tone for a memorable dining experience.
During our stay, we were especially impressed by the breakfast offerings. The chef’s finesse with omelets and egg dishes was unmatched—each plate perfectly prepared and full of flavor. We concluded our Amsterdam visit with a family-style dinner at Jansz., where we sampled a variety of standout dishes: the crispy Bitterballen, vibrant Sea Bass Crudo, seasonal Burrata with Peach & Corn, tender Ribeye Steak, and the refreshing Mara des Bois Sorbet—a sweet finale.
Pulitzer Garden: Al Fresco Dining in a Tranquil Courtyard
The Pulitzer Garden offers a serene escape in the heart of the city. Surrounded by the hotel's historic canal houses, this courtyard restaurant provides a relaxed atmosphere for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The menu features a range of Mediterranean-inspired dishes, including fresh salads, pasta, and grilled meats, complemented by a selection of fine wines and cocktails.
Pulitzer's Bar: Timeless Elegance and Expertly Crafted Cocktails
Pulitzer's Bar is a sophisticated lounge that exudes timeless elegance. With its rich wood paneling, plush seating, and ambient lighting, the bar offers an inviting setting for guests to unwind. The expert mixologists serve a curated selection of classic and contemporary cocktails, as well as an extensive list of spirits and wines.
Whether you're seeking a refined dining experience, a casual meal in a peaceful garden, or a stylish spot for evening drinks, Pulitzer Amsterdam's dining venues cater to every preference, enhancing your stay with exceptional culinary offerings.
